Duchess Meghan makes Zoom call to send sweet words of encouragement to a woman supported by her patronage

Duchess Meghan has been keeping in touch with her patronages from her new home in Los Angeles, and she surprised one of Smart Works' clients with a special Zoom call on April 27!

The Duchess of Sussex wanted to offer her support to the woman, who is one of many who have been helped by organization. Smart Works provides training for women looking for jobs and helps them find outfits they can wear to interviews. It's just started virtual services in light of the coronavirus pandemic and has helped clients with more than 200 hours of support so far.

"You seem incredibly confident and prepared," Meghan said in the chat with the client, who was up for a psychology internship. "I know everyone here is so excited. When I was reading about what your interests are, and especially you have a big focus in mental health as well, right? Psychology? I think that's excellent."

The client thanked Meghan for her encouraging words after she shared why the internship is so important to her and what she hopes to learn in the position.

"Of course!" the duchess replied. "I just wanted to be able to call in and wish you the best of luck, and my fingers are crossed for you.

"There's so much going on in the world right now, and to be such a beacon of hope and focusing on getting through it, and all the positivity that we just want to send your way, and to make sure you can get on the other side of this, too, and have such a great opportunity there."

Smart Works posted video from the call on its Twitter account, which you can watch above.

"It's been such an honour to meet and learn from so many talented women in the Smart Works network over the years, and recently to see the amazing work they're doing to adapt their programs to the reality of this pandemic," she said in comments that accompanied the video. "Their ability to continue to empower women and help them harness the confidence they need to succeed during this time is inspiring."

Meghan also had more to say about the importance of her patronage's work as she continued to speak to the client.

"It's a pleasure to support them. You see how great they do and how many people they help and that's what it's all about. I've been really proud to be able to be their patron, but it's an easy yes when you have such incredible women helping you."

The Duchess of Sussex's first engagement when she returned from her maternity leave in 2019 was with Smart Works. Back then, she and her fashion designer friend Misha Nonoo created a very special capsule collection for the patronage. When someone buys an item from the Smart Set collection online or in stores, another gets donated to the patronage so a woman has access to good quality clothing for a job interview.

This is the second Zoom call Meghan has made from Los Angeles. On April 17, she called The Hubb Community Kitchen to support its new campaign to feed hungry Londoners during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can watch some of the video from that chat above, courtesy our friends from HELLO! UK.
