Peter Phillips and Autumn Phillips to divorce and share custody of their children

The Queen's grandson Peter Phillips and Autumn Phillips have announced they will divorce and will share custody of their two children, Savannah and Isla.

On Feb. 10, a report emerged in the press that the two had separated, and they announced their decision in a statement the next day. The news prompted speculation that Autumn, who is originally from Canada, might return there with the children since she is a dual citizen. She will remain in the UK, the former couple said.

"As both Peter and Autumn are not senior members of the Royal Family, it was not necessary to formally announce their separation last year," their statement read. "However, in light of media commentary, the following statement is issued; after informing HM The Queen and members of both families last year, Peter and Autumn jointly agreed to separate.

"They had reached the conclusion that this was the best course of action for their two children and ongoing friendship. The decision to divorce and share custody came about after many months of discussions and although sad, is an amicable one. The couple's first priority will remain the continued wellbeing and upbringing of their wonderful daughters Savannah (nine) and Isla (seven). Both families were naturally sad at the announcement, but fully supportive of Peter and Autumn in the joint decision to co-parent their children.

"Both Peter and Autumn have remained in Gloucestershire to bring up their two children, where they have been settled for a number of years. Peter and Autumn have requested privacy and compassion for their children while the family continues to adapt to these changes."

Autumn and Peter met at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal in 2003 while she was a management consultant and he worked in sports sponsorship and management. They got engaged in 2007 and were married on May 17, 2008 at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, the same spot Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan married just over 10 years later. Autumn gave birth to Savannah in 2010 and Isla in 2012.

The former couple were seen several times together last year, most recently at the Braemar Highland Games in Scotland in September, which they both attended with the Queen, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla. Autumn was also seen with Peter at Royal Ascot in June and Trooping the Colour with their children just a few days earlier.
