Duchess Meghan’s mother hands out blankets to California fire victims

Duchess Meghan has often spoken about how her mother, Doria Ragland, raised her to give back to those in need, and Doria’s generosity was on full display this week as she was seen giving blankets to those affected by wildfires in Los Angeles.

Spanish-language publication Diez Minutos published a series of photos of Doria carrying blankets from trucks at a relief event. She as “prepared to take the pile of blankets she had collected herself and distribute them among those who requested it,” the weekly magazine wrote of her generous and kind-hearted gesture.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Doria, who is a social worker and yoga instructor, give back since Meghan joined the Royal Family. In 2018, she flew to the UK to help Meghan launch Together, the cookbook the Duchess of Sussex worked on to benefit the Hubb Community Kitchen, which is run by survivors of the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London.

California has had a particularly bad fire season. It seems like that’s written every year, and it’s true, but many of the state’s residents have been displaced by blazes – three of which have been in Los Angeles county alone since the beginning of October. Late last month, a state-wide emergency was declared over the blazes. Neighbouring counties such as San Bernardino and Ventura have also dealt with wildfires, meaning the LA area’s air has been pretty thick with smoke for most of this fall.

All told, a total of 6,660 wildfires have caused havoc in the state this year, causing a whopping US$163 million in damage and destroying more than 102,257 hectares of land, according to government statistics. With the Santa Ana winds expected to pick up over this month and the next, it doesn’t look like things are going to quiet down anytime soon.

Meghan, Prince Harry and Archie are due to head to the United States to spend Thanksgiving with Doria this week, as part of a six-week extended break from royal duties. While nothing has been confirmed, we wouldn’t be surprised if Harry and Meghan decide to join Doria in giving back in a similar way while they’re there, giving the focus they’ll have on family plus this disaster being top of mind.
