Meghan Markle misunderstood the Queen's instructions ahead of their first joint outing

Meghan Markle's first joint engagement with the Queen was a major success for the brand new royal, who visited Cheshire with the monarch just a month after marrying Prince Harry - but it almost wasn't so! According to a new biography celebrating Prince Charles' milestone birthday, Charles At Seventy by Robert Jobson, the duchess missed an important instruction from Her Majesty regarding her outfit.

The royal author revealed that the former actress had been told by royal aides that she should wear a hat for the outing but made a sartorial misstep by ignoring the note. "I don't think the Duchess fully understood," said a senior figure close to the Queen in an excerpt published in the Daily Mail. "This was not a request. They are for others to make, not the Queen."

Apparently, the 92-year-old monarch had advised the newest member of 'The Firm' that she'd be wearing a green hat in honour of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fires - an indication that the 37-year-old should follow suit. Still new to royal protocol and the subtle cues of her husband's grandmother, the Duchess of Sussex arrived without a hat. Luckily, the pair was already forming a solid relationship, and Meghan had even already won over her beloved corgis, as Prince Harry revealed in their engagement interview.

And on their day out together, the royal duo had a spectacular time as they were photographed laughing heartily, chatting with well-wishers and waving to crowds. Meghan even rode the Royal Train with the monarch, her personal locomotive that is rarely ridden by young members of the royal family (Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry have reportedly never boarded the special train). Meghan also wore a gorgeous pair of pearl and diamond earrings with her Givenchy dress that day, a gift from the Queen that she has worn on a number of occasions since, including her arrival in Fiji on her first royal tour.

Meghan had also likely made clear her dedication to the victims of the Grenfell disaster as she had been secretly toiling away on her first solo charity project, a cookbook created with recipes from the women who formed a community kitchen to feed their families and community after the fires ravaged their homes. Together: Our Community Cookbook, was released in September and includes a foreword by the duchess.

The pregnant royal has made no secret of her respect for the Queen, gushing over the longest-reigning monarch in her first interview following her engagement to Prince Harry. "It's incredible, I think, you know, to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honour and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her I had such a deep understanding and of course incredible respect for being able to have that time with her. And she's an incredible woman."
