Mark Hamill thought looking at Princess Margaret would get him thrown into jail

It seemed there was nothing Luke Skywalker wouldn't do, but actor Mark Hamill wasn't one to break the rules - especially when it came to the Royal Family. Before meeting Princess Margaret in 1980 at the London premiere of The Empire Strikes Back, it seems the Star Wars lead was fed some fake royal protocol by co-star Billy Dee Williams - and the funnyman took to Twitter on Wednesday (Sept. 19) to reminisce about it.

". @HamillHimself one of my favorite photo’s" said Billy Dee alongside an image of Mark shaking hands with Princess Margaret, who was clad in a pretty blue ruffled ensemble. But something is off about the interaction, as the young actor is very conspicuously avoiding making eye contact with the Queen's sister.

Mark tweeted at Billy Dee to give some context to the photo, and it all comes down to a hilarious prank. "This photo was snapped moments after @realbdw told me that direct eye contact with royalty was an offense punishable by imprisonment in the Tower of London. #Pranked" Mark explained.

Since then, the 66-year-old has had plenty of opportunities to look members of the Royal Family in the eyes without any repercussions. In 1997, a re-release of The Empire Strikes Back put Mark face-to-face with Prince Charles, with whom he seems to have had a chummy conversation.

And Britain's charismatic princes, William and Harry, can put anyone at ease, including the cast of Star Wars. The brothers visited the set of of the latest trilogy in 2016, where they even filmed a cameo in The Last Jedi with Tom Hardy (not to mention hugging Chewbacca and meeting beloved bot BB-8). Clad in full Stormtrooper costumes and unrecognizable in their helmets, the brothers' work sadly ended up on the cutting room floor for one simple reason: they're too tall!

"Stormtroopers have to be exactly 5ft 11in," a source told the Mail on Sunday. "At the time we shot it I think the feeling was that the scene would make the final movie. Everyone feels bad that William and Harry lost out on their big moment. However, the scene just didn't work for the final cut so it was left out." At the very least, though, their visit helped a Star Wars icon prove once again that he can play it cool around royalty.
