How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle paid tribute to Princess Diana at their wedding

From the moment Prince Harry proposed to Meghan Markle with a ring crafted from his mother's diamonds, it was clear that Princess Diana would play a significant role in his wedding day. From the flowers to the music to the guestlist, the memory of the late princess was alive and well inside St. George’s Chapel. Here are some of the ways the couple paid tribute to Harry’s beloved mother.

The bride’s bespoke bouquet, created by Kensington palace’s go-to floral designer Philippa Craddock, included Princess Diana’s favourite flower, forget-me-nots. It also featured some stems handpicked by Prince Harry at Kensington Palace, where he lived with his mother prior to her death in 1997. Philippa also created breathtaking arches using a variety of blooms, including garden roses, peonies, foxgloves, beech, birch, hornbeam and another of Diana’s favourites, white roses.

While Prince Harry spends much of his royal life with the Queen and Co., he has strong ties with mother’s side of the family. Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer and his children were invited to the wedding, as were her sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes. The latter was asked by her nephew to deliver a reading at the service, making her the only family member to speak during the hour-long service.

With so many beautiful hymns to choose from, the couple decided on "Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer." The moving song was one of four hymns sung at his mother’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1997. Similarly, Prince William and Kate included the tune at their wedding in 2011. The duo also invited Diana’s good friend Elton John, who adapted “Candle In The Wind” in memory of the princess, to perform at a luncheon following the service.

Just as the Duchess of Cambridge did during her wedding to Prince William, Meghan dropped the promise to “obey” from her traditional vows. Both royal brides followed in the footsteps of their mother-in-law Princess Diana, who created a stir back in 1981 when she left the statement out of her vows to Prince Charles.

When Meghan and Harry set off for their second wedding reception in a vintage electric Jaguar convertible, the bride's right hand was bedecked with a gorgeous blue ring. It turns out the emerald-cut aquamarine bauble belonged to her husband's late mother and is likely to be a gift from the newly named Duke of Sussex to his Duchess on their wedding day.

Diana could be seen at every turn throughout Meghan and Harry's royal wedding – even in their official wedding portraits. The newly married couple – surrounded by their adorable bridesmaids, page boys and members of the royal family – decided to include Diana's beautiful green sofa in their photos. The piece of furniture, made in 1827, was also used during Prince Harry's christening at Windsor Castle in 1984.
