Katy Perry to perform at Super Bowl halftime show

After months of speculation, NFL organizers have announced that Katy Perry will perform during the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.

The "Roar" singer reportedly refused to pay to perform during the televised event, though she will play the show for free.

Earlier this year, the NFL also reached out to Rihanna and Coldplay to see if they’d be willing to pony up for the opportunity to perform during the most-watched musical program of the year.

The NFL has never paid its halftime acts, though it does typically cover costs like travel and production - which don’t come cheap. Beyoncé’s 2013 performance cost $600,000 to produce while Madonnas in 2012 cost more than $1 million.

The league tried to take it one step further this year by asking that artists contribute part of their post-performance tour earnings to the NFL, or at least make a contribution of some kind, but Katy Perry – who is one of the best-selling artists of all time with 81 million singles and 11 million albums sold to date – declined to pay.

The argument goes that performing during the Super Bowl pays out in the long run due to enormous exposure — exposure that Katy, a worldwide superstar, may not necessarily need. Last year’s performance featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers drew even more viewers than the actual football game (115.3 million viewers versus 112.2 million)!

Savvier musicians have learned how to capitalize on their Super Bowl shows with aptly timed tours and albums – Beyoncé famously announced her “Mrs. Carter Show” world tour shortly after her electrifying performance and tickets to Bruno Mars’ tour went on sale the very next day following his halftime show.

It looks like bets are on for the 29-year-old singer to release a new album or announce a worldwide tour come February!
