KISS brand ambassador and celebrity nail artist Gina Edwards on fall nail tips, trends and her favourite royals

From magazine covers and runways to red carpet and movie sets, celebrity nail artist and KISS brand ambassador Gina Edwards has an impressive roster of celebrity clients. She’s worked with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Mary J. Blige and Gisele Bündchen, to name a few. She worked on the set of Ocean’s 8, and is the go-to nail artist for campaigns for brands such as Michael Kors, Glossier and Chanel.

HELLO! Canada caught up with the manicurist in the midst of her busy schedule at the New York Fashion Week, and chatted about her collaboration with designers, tips for applying press-on nails and her favourite royals.

HELLO! Canada: What was your inspiration for the nail looks at the Rebecca Minkoff Fall 2019 show?

Gina Edwards: It’s all about the downtown girl, being playful, energetic, and on trend, and very familiar with fashion. [The designer] wanted the girls in each collection to have their own individuality, so I created these looks using the KISS Gel Fantasy Nails. And we created a gold look, a zebra, a leopard and a plaid as an accent nails. And what you’re going to see is the magic coming together with the clothing and the nails, and it’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of colour.

Can you tell us why someone might prefer the press-on nails over a gel manicure or acrylic?

Well, as women, we’re working women, and our schedules are incredibly overloaded, so the beauty of wearing the KISS imPRESS Press-On Manicure, is the fact that you don't have to be held hostage to your salon appointment. You go out of your work, pull out a box of tips, you can put it on yourself. And you can take it off yourself very easily instead of going back to the salon and soaking it in acetone. I mean I love a gel nail, but this product is wonderful for those who don’t have time and missing appointments all the time. It’s a do-and-go nail.

Do you have any tips for preventing the press-on nails from falling off?

The [preparation] is the key. So you really want to make sure that your nails are free from the oil. You need to prep, prep, prep. It’s so important. So [you need to] buff the nail, get rid of the shine, and push back your cuticles. Because even the smallest amount of cuticle, which is the pterygium, which lays flat on the nail, if you apply a tip, as the days wear on, that nail cuticle grows, and that’s gonna pop your [press-on] nails off. So application and prep work is key.

What are the trends for the upcoming fall and the holidays?

For the fall coming, you have the burned orange, the colour is trending, more like butterscotch colours, silk tone, cappuccino, and wintery nudes. For the holidays, I always find the metallics very on trend, with what’s happening with glitter. Ombré glitter is very popular. And of course, stonework, because we always like to take that extra step to look extra fancy.

As you know, J.Lo is getting married soon. What kind of nails do you envision her doing on her wedding day?

I envision her with a white nail. I feel like she needs a little bit of an embellishment – but keeping it sophisticated, because she’s so glamourous. But I feel like the nail should be long, pointy, almond-shaped nail. I love the almond shape on her, she has beautiful hands for it. And then add a little embellishment; not glitter, I think more a bit of like stonework, or pearls.

Can you tell us about some of your celebrity clients that you worked with?

Yes, I work with Bebe [Rexha], she’s a client of mine. She’s a riot, I love her. Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Mary J Blige. She’s everything, and I tell her that. The last time I saw her, I did her nails for her MAC collaboration, and I said “I don’t wanna say it, but I’m gonna say it.” And I said, “you’re everything!” She was like “Awww!” And I worked with her like three other times before, where she was staying up at a hotel or whatever, and I was [acting] cool, you know. But I really do. She really has good energy. I like working with people with good energy.

Last but not least, if you can do nails for any royals, who would that be and what would you do?

That’s a good one. There’s something about Fergie [Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York]. I think that she’s timeless. She’s been in the royal family for so long, and I think she just has insider information. I’d be like “Just tell me!” because manicurists, they always have stories to tell, but we keep our lips sealed. And also Meghan, because I saw that she was at the US Open with Serena Williams, and I was like “you know what, I would like to work with her.” I’ve never worked with her, but I think she’s very chill and laidback. I would love to work with her. I think it would be an honour.
