Nina Dobrev on embracing her natural beauty and feeling ‘absolutely comfortable’ going makeup free

Some people may feel uncomfortable going makeup free in public or on social media, but Nina Dobrev isn’t afraid to bare all.

“I absolutely feel comfortable going out in public and being on social media without makeup,” the 28-year-old actress told People, adding that her beauty routine is very low-maintenance when she is not working or attending red carpet movie premieres and award shows. “When I have a lot of makeup on, that’s usually work. At home, I just let it breathe,” she further explained.

While the Flatliners star is very comfortable in her own skin now, she confessed that there was a time when that wasn’t the case. “I don’t think I was always comfortable with myself,” she admitted. As time passed, Nina says her confidence grew when she stopped caring about what people thought about her. “As I [got] older, I start[ed] to care less,” she stated.

Nina is also determined to use her fame to make a positive impact on her more than 20 million Instagram and Twitter followers. Her advice? “Your smile is your best accessory, and I try to wear it every day if I can,” said the Canadian actress, adding that while a smile can go a long way, personality is what makes a person gorgeous, not their appearance. “At the end of the day, you are what makes you beautiful. Your personality, your aura and who you naturally are.”

The former Degrassi star proved that she is fearless when it comes to beauty by chopping off her luscious locks earlier this year. The actress debuted her cropped lob at the London premiere of xXx: Return of Xander Cage in January. She later posted a picture of her new look on Instagram alongside the caption: ‘New Year. New Me.”
