Lorde exploded onto the music scene in 2013 with a distinct sound and the addictive hit “Royals.”
The singer-songwriter has achieved international recognition both for her alt-pop album, Pure Heroine, and it’s aloof disconnect from the pop genre as a whole.
In interviews she’s as candid as in the precocious lyrics of her songs, having critiqued some of pop’s biggest stars (Selena Gomez, Britney Spears and Taylor Swift, among others). But this didn’t stop the outspoken teen from snagging a number of Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
And as the first-ever New Zealand solo artist to achieve a number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100, Ella Yelich-O’Connor is making a lasting mark on the industry.
