Monterey is gearing up to get a lot more dramatic! Almost a year ago, it was announced thatMeryl Streep would join the incredible cast of Big Little Lies. Now, fans of the hit thriller series are getting their first glimpse inside season two, set to air June 9 on HBO.

Starring Nicole Kidman (Celeste Wright), Shailene Woodley (Jane Chapman), Reese Witherspoon (Madeline Martha Mackenzie), Laura Dern (Renata Klein) and Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie Carlson), the women are aptly named the Monterey Five after season one ended in a cliffhanger murder scene of Nicole’s on-screen husband, Perry Wright (played by Alexander Skarsgard). In the trailer, fans discover Meryl (playing Mary Louise Wright) takes on the role of the new widow’s mother-in-law – clearly in town to solve the murder mystery.

The teaser ends with a transformed Meryl asking Reese: “My son is dead. I want to know what happened that night. I’m very tempted to ask you, but I – I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?”

Fans of the show got a first glimpse of the 69-year-old in her new role in April 2018, when Nicole shared a photo to her Instagram page: “First day on the set with Meryl and ‘my’ darling boys! #BigLittleLies.”

The image sees Meryl bonding with her on-screen grandsons, played by Cameron and Nicholas Crovett. HBO then released the same picture, along with the cryptic message: “Family is everything. Here’s your first look at Meryl Streep and @nicolekidman as Mary Louise Wright and Celeste Wright.”

Back then, The Hollywood Reporter reported Meryl’s character will arrive in Monterey to search for answers about her son’s death and to take care of her two grandsons. Writer and showrunner David E. Kelley previously revealed the celebrated actress was his dream casting for the show, along with Tom Hanks. HBO recently said the second instalment will focus on the “malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting.” The synopsis also read: “Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode… the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.”
