In 1984 she made the big move from stage to film – although she did return to Broadway in 1989 for The Heidi Chronicles – appearing in Footloose as Rusty, school girl and friend to Kevin Bacon's love interest Ariel (played by Lori Singer).

In the '90s, she teamed up with other big names including Bette Midler (twice), Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, Nicolas Cage, Johnny Depp and Bill Murray before getting her big break at the end of the decade as the iconic Carrie Bradshaw.
