Will Arnett on his new Netflix show 'Flaked' and why his kids should find him funny

It's no wonder Will Arnett's boys, Archie, 7, and five year-old Abel, have no trouble keeping him in stitches. Their dad is the Canadian comic actor who played the Segway-riding magician G.O.B. Bluth on the beloved series Arrested Development and their mom is Amy Poehler, to whom Will was married for 11 years before the couple divorced in 2014.

But the laughter doesn't always go both ways. "My kids don’t find me as funny as they should!" Will told Hello!. "We do have a lot of fun and we joke around a lot. [More often] my kids make me laugh." We caught up with the funnyman in Toronto, where we chatted fatherhood, reinvention and the new Netflix show Flaked, created and produced by Will and on which he also stars.

After stints on 30 Rock and voicing Batman in The Lego Movie, Will, 45, is ready to show a side of himself that fans haven’t seen. In Flaked he plays Chip, a recovering alcoholic who means well, even when he falls for the object of his best friend’s attention. "Chip is somebody who talks a lot about learning from his mistakes and I don't know if he ever really does it," he explained.

The show is set in Venice Beach, Calif., where Will once lived and had his own coming of age. "Venice is kind of like the home of reinvention to me. There’s something great about [the way] that community allows for that," he said. "When I lived out there, I went through various stages of my life, and being there gave me a lot of comfort. At various points in my life, that was exactly what I needed."

It's hard to imagine where he finds time to star in his a second Netflix show – Will also voices a debauched celebrity horse on the animated hit Bojack Horseman. But the Toronto-born actor ensures that parenting remains his first priority. "I would say that my downtime is spent primarily coaching little league baseball."
