Claire Danes on 'Homeland,' two-year-old son Cyrus and travelling constantly

Leaping ahead in time has served Claire Danes and her alter ego Carrie Mathison well. Describing the new season of Homeland, the Golden Globe winner, 36, says, “Two-plus years have passed and we’re in Europe. Carrie’s left the CIA and she actually has a life for the first time ever.” Of course, she adds, season 5 has more drama in store. “[Carrie’s] incredibly happy for about five minutes,” she adds with a laugh. Leaving the high stakes at work, Claire has settled into family life with husband Hugh Dancy, 40, and their two-year-old son, Cyrus. In this exclusive interview, she tells Hello! about their nomadic lives as the Homeland cast puts down roots overseas.

What’s changed for Carrie this season?
It’s very different. Carrie has tried very earnestly and very successfully, she thinks, to emancipate herself from her past and reincarnate herself as a more connected, decent, transparent person. She realizes that is not exactly possible.

The show is filming in Berlin now. Do you have time to explore it with your family?
We’re figuring it out as we go along. Last year, Hugh took a job in Australia when I was in South Africa. It meant we spent too much time apart. We learned our lesson there. It’s very good to have Cyrus at the end of the day to get me out of [Carrie’s] psychic turmoil and stress. I just am immediately “mom” again. He’s a wonderful anchor in that respect. By the time we wrap, I’m pretty spent. I’m ready to do a comedy at this point! [ Laughs]

Do you find he takes after you or your husband?
He actually looks like both of us. [Laughs] He’s always slept well and eaten well. He’s curious and engaged, but knock on every bit of wood on the planet, so far, so good.

Do you travel together often?
We travel constantly. [My son’s] passport has been so thoroughly stamped, but we try to keep his routine very consistent. We’re just making it up as we go along.

Where would you like to see your character go from here?
I want her to be OK. I want her to have more sustained happiness. Maybe that’s just me being a little Pollyanna-ish, but I think that she is powerful. She should be able to assert that power. And I want her to live, which is never something you can take for granted on Homeland!

The audience has been waiting for your character and Peter Quinn [played by Rupert Friend] to get together again. Might that happen this season?
I think that kiss in the finale was more about having just experienced something incredibly traumatic, and clinging to each other for that reason. I don’t think they would have made suitable partners. They’re too alike. They’re both outliers and I don’t see that lasting, but she has a great new boyfriend. [Smiles]
