To mark Prince Charles’ 70th birthday, Clarence House released two beautifully informal family portraits showing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge , Prince Harry and Meghan , and Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall with their grandkids, all posed together in blue and white ensembles. Naturally, Kate showed off her fashion savvy, donning a navy polka-dot dress with white collar, cuffs and buttons down the front that also paid tribute to a missing family member – it was almost exactly the same design as one the late Princess Diana wore back in 1985.

Holding her youngest child, Prince Louis, the duchess smiled brightly for the camera in the timeless shirtdress. Though the collar on her dress is different from that of Princess Diana’s, the two ensembles could easily be mistaken for the same dress given the colour, cut and accentuated shoulders. To make matters even sweeter, the mother of three also wore Diana’s sapphire earrings , yet another subtle nod to her children’s late grandmother.

But this isn’t the first time the two have donned similar dots! One of their most memorable twinning moments was, of course, the births of their first children. Both the duchess and the Princess of Wales took their spots on the Lindo Wing steps some 31 years apart as they debuted their newborns in blue polka dots – an intentional and heartwarming homage to Prince William’s late mom, who sadly couldn’t be there to meet his children.

Just like Diana did for Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cambridge loves stepping out to watch different sporting events and cheering on her husband from the sidelines of polo matches. The Princess of Wales wore a black-and-white polka-dot Victor Edelstein dress to a match in 1987, and Kate took inspiration from this look, donning a similarly patterned Dolce & Gabbana number to Wimbledon in 2017. The two rocked the pattern in baby blue, too – Diana paired her collared dress with a wide-brimmed hat for a visit to Victoria Station in 1989, while the mother of three wore an Altuzarra number to a Heads Together outing in 2016.
