Academy invites Zendaya, Awkwafina, Cynthia Erivo, Constance Wu and others to become members

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has sent out more than 800 invitations to possible new members, more than a third of whom are people of colour.

Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, Golden Globe winner Awkwafina, Euphoria and Spider-Man: Far from Home star Zendaya, Hustlers star Constance Wu, Joker actress Zazie Beetz and Get Out's Lakeith Stanfield all received invitations to join as voting members. Natasha Lyonne of Orange is the New Black, Eva Longoria, Niecy Nash, Tim McGraw, Florence Pugh, Olivia Wilde, Beanie Feldstein and Ana de Armas were also invited to do so.

"We take great pride in the strides we have made in exceeding our initial inclusion goals set back in 2016, but acknowledge the road ahead is a long one," Dawn Hudson, the Academy's CEO, said in a statement. "We are committed to staying the course... We look forward to continuing to foster an Academy that reflects the world around us in our membership, our programs, our new Museum, and in our awards."

Thirty-six per cent of those who were invited to join the Academy as voting members are people of colour, and nearly half of those who received letters asking them to do so are women. The Academy had previously set a goal of doubling the number of women and people of colour who were members by 2020 – it has doubled that, it says.

This news comes as last month it was revealed the 2021 Oscars will be moved to April 25 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the eligibility deadline had been moved back to Feb. 28. We'll find out who is nominated on March 15.
