Beyoncé, Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion win big at 2020 BET Awards

Beyoncé was honoured for her humanitarian work, and Lizzo and Megan Thee Stallion's massive success in 2020 continued as they took home key prizes at this year's BET Awards.

Lizzo won the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist prize, while Megan took home the Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Viewer's Choice Award for her "Hot Girl Summer" video with Nicki Minaj. Roddy Ricch was named Best New Artist, and his Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial also won Album of the year.

Michael B. Jordan and Issa Rae were named Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively, while Simone Biles and LeBron James took home the Sportswoman of the Year and Sportsman of the Year awards.

Michelle Obama made a very special appearance during the ceremony, which was a broadcast to ensure social distancing. The former U.S. First Lady presented Queen Bey with the Humanitarian Award.

Beyoncé has supported various causes throughout her career, and just last week launched a Black Business Fund through BeyGood. She's also helped her hometown of Houston out in very meaningful ways, from helping build low-income housing to giving back in the aftermath of natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey.

During the coronavirus pandemic, she and her mother Tina Knowles Lawson have been helping provide free testing to help those most at risk of COVID-19. She and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also worked to create a special wing at a Houston hospital that would treat coronavirus patients.

She also continues to give back with her Homecoming Scholarships for youth and works with Global Citizen to give youth on the African continent a fellowship to help them find employment.

"She's always turning up, looking out and making us all a little bit better, a little more fierce, and she's doing it all while staying devoted to her children and the loved ones she holds dear," Michelle said as she gave Beyoncé the award. "You inspire me. You inspire all of us."

In her acceptance speech, Beyoncé dedicated the award to those protesting anti-Black racism and police violence around the world.

"Your voices are being heard, and you're proving to our ancestors that their struggles were not in vain," she said, telling her fans to keep up the work. "I'm encouraging you to continue to take action. Continue to change and dismantle a racist and unequal system. We have to continue to do this together. Continue to fight for each other and lift each other up."

Kobe Bryant also received a special tribute during the broadcast from rapper Lil Wayne. He performed his 2009 song "Kobe Bryant" to honour the NBA legend, who died in a helicopter crash with his daughter Gianna in February.

Alicia Keys also performed a brand new track, "Perfect Way to Die," for the first time. The song is about a mother who loses her son in a shooting. She released the track earlier this month in connection with protests over the death of George Floyd.
