'There's a whole world out there waiting for us:' Billy Porter shares a message to his younger self

Billy Porter spoke with James Corden during a recent virtual interview for The Late Late Show about Pride, his new single and the message he would give to his younger self.

James and Billy discussed the letter the actor had penned to himself for Soho House magazine, entitled "Dear Billy: a new day is coming." Billy had written the letter to his 20-year-old self exclusively for the magazine in celebration of Pride.

The TV host asked the Pose star, "What do you wish you had known back then?"

"I just wish that I could have seen images of myself reflected back,” Billy explained.

"I think, you know, recently, within the last 20 years or so, we really have started to have the conversation about representation, representation in the mainstream and how powerful that is for people who are on the margin to see themselves reflected back so they can simply understand, we can simply understand, that it’s going to be all right.

"There are others like us in the world. And while we might not be in a position at 12-years-old to feel validated in that way, that there's a whole world out there waiting for us, that's ready, willing and able to embrace us for the human beings that we are.”

The award-winning actor also discussed how his art was something that fuelled him, and there was no alternative path for him.

“There was no Plan B," he explained. "The only thing I had was my art, and the joy that that gave me, even inside of there not being work for me.

"The art was always the thing that kept me focused and kept me moving forward. That’s all I can attribute it to.”

The actor, who is known for his awe-inspiring red carpet fashion, was also asked about his COVID-19 lockdown style at the start of the The Late Late Show interview.

Billy laughed and said, "It's been a lot of sweatpants, a lot of T-shirts. I've been taking a bit of a break from these fashion things."

The Broadway performer also explained how his virtual interviews are impacted.

"When I show up to these things, it's only from the waist up," he continued. "So, I'm normally in my sweatsuit or drawers below."

For the interview with James, Billy looked fabulous as per usual in a printed long-sleeved shirt and oversized round glosses with sparkling gold frames.
