Justin Trudeau’s Liberals re-elected in tight 2019 federal election as Canadian stars encourage followers to vote

After fighting a tough and difficult campaign, Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party emerged victorious in the 2019 federal election, hanging on to take enough seats to stay in power and win a minority government.

The Liberals were projected to take 157 seats in the House of Commons, which just shy of the 170 needed to secure a majority, according to CBC News. The Conservative Party led by Andrew Scheer proved tough competition for Justin, and will take 121 seats.

Jagmeet NDP, meanwhile, will likely hold the balance of power, taking 24 seats. The Bloc Quebecois garnered 32 seats, while the Green Party brings its House of Commons seat total to three, up from just one in 2015. Former Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould was re-elected, this time as an Independent MP, in Vancouver Grenville.

“You did it my friends. Congratulations,” Justin said in a victory speech that evening. “It has been the greatest honour to serve you for these past four years and tonight you’re sending us back to work for you. We take this responsibility seriously and we will work hard for you, for your families and for your future.”

Justin took to Instagram earlier in the day to post a sweet photo of him at the polls with his family.

“Hadrien helped me vote this morning,” he wrote. “For all our kids, make your voice heard and vote today!”

It was an important election for the country, and Canadian stars recognized this, too. Everyone from Ryan Reynolds to Dan Levy was calling for people to head out to the polls and vote.

Ryan had been tweeting information about how to vote as soon as advance polls were set to open, trying to make it easy for his fans to do their civic duty.

Later in the month, the Deadpool star tweeted a sweet picture of him holding his newborn daughter and smiling at Blake Lively. In it, he had an important election message in which he told his followers to think about the environment when they voted.

Dan was also reminding his followers to vote early, telling them Thanksgiving weekend was the perfect time for them to do so.

On Oct. 20, Jann Arden posted a special tweet of her own, encouraging followers to get out and vote, which she also did on election day. The day after, she took to Twitter to share her feelings about the result.

Tegan and Sara also cleverly told their fans to vote by hiding an allcaps message in one of their Instagram posts.

“VOTE TOMORROW! DO NOT PUT IT OFF! VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE,” they wrote in a post that thanked fans for attending two of their shows in Toronto.
