TIFF 2019: Neve Campbell chills out with a glass of red and Dev Patel poses for selfies at parties on Day 1

So many parties, so little time. What was meant to be a short but sweet kickoff to TIFF 2019, was anything but. Let’s dive in, shall we?

A cinq a sept went down at St. Regis Hotel at the Moet pop-up in the Astor Lounge. Toronto socialites Mary Symons, Alex Filliatrault, Holly Miklas, Christine Rezvanian were spotted sipping bubbles and were snapped in the Hollywood Reporter portrait studio. The Real Housewives of Toronto’s Ann Kaplan and Brandon Lankar, bachelor-about-town and other bestie to Jessica Mulroney, were also seen there.

As the clock struck 7:00, the spot emptied out, guests got into their black cars and Lyft rides and headed to the annual Toronto Life Best Dressed party, which was already in full swing a hop, skip and jump away at Ricarda’s Atrium.

So many Canadian media darlings were there! I spotted The Social’s Lainey Lui, Cynthia Loyst, Melissa Grelo and Jess Allan, eTalk’s Chloe Wilde, Tyrone Edwards and Traci Melchor, and local celeb Gurdeep Ahluwalia of CP24 and Toronto’s very own Kardinal Offishall. They were all floating around the room, air kissing, sipping cocktails and taking photos. The ladies of The Social rested their heels and set up shop next to the open bar serving signature cocktails and having light bites.

When I got word Dev Patel and Hugh Laurie arrived at ICONINK’s Weslodge to celebrate the world premiere of The Personal History of David Copperfield before the film’s screening, I dipped out and headed there. Fans were waiting outside, trying to peak in the window to catch glimpses of the two .

Hugh stood bar side sipping a classic CÎROC Vodka martini (CÎROC played host for the party) and Dev stood near an intimate table at the front, talking shop with those in attendance at the private event. The two both exited the party ever-so-strategically five minutes apart, but went out the front entrance – to the delight of the many awaiting fans. Dev even posed for a selfie with a lucky one. Unfortunately, there was a slight turn for the worse when the fans began to follow him as he walked down King Street West. Rest assured, security surrounded him and his night unfolded delightfully.

I caught the film’s director, Armando Iannucci, marvelling about the positive reviews of the film in an elevator at St. Regis on Friday morning. For those not in the know, the film is an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel, David Copperfield.

RBC House kicked off on Thursday night as well. After it leaked that the event had partnered with OVO for a private concert at the venue, there was buzz throughout the city that a Drake sighting was looming. I squashed that rumour quickly and noticed people gathering at TIFF hotspot Soho House in hopes to get a glimpse of celebs hidden in plain sight.

Back at Weslodge, CÎROC Vodka hosted yet another private party where Neve Campbell arrived right on time (like the lady she is) at the afterparty for the premier of Castle In The Ground . She wore the white blazer that was draped over her arms when she walked the red carpet earlier that evening in a killer black leather dress. She sat at a table chatting with fellow cast and crew members, a glass of red in front of her. Her pint-sized co-star Imogen Poots stood at the bar, chatting animatedly with those in attendance.

There are at least seven parties and one cast dinner of note on tap for Friday evening, all which I’ll be attending. Be sure to follow the thread on Hello! Canada’s Twitter, as well as the hashtag #jensTIFFbits for information including star sighting and a behind the velvet rope look (if you will) at the most exclusive parties. Happy TIFF, dear readers!
