Michelle Obama plays intense (and hilarious!) celebrity dodgeball game against James Corden

There’s nothing like a good game of dodgeball to get some laughs!

Michelle Obama and James Corden each put together stacked and star-studded teams (Team USA and UK, respectively) to face off on Monday’s episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden.

The duo started in James’s car – the usual setting for an episode of Carpool Karaoke – and decided singing wasn’t in the cards this week.

“We’re better at sports,” James noted.

“I don’t think that’s true,” Michelle said. “And if it is, you have nothing to do with it.”

The former US First Lady counted Hollywood heavyweights like Alison Janney, Mila Kunis, Melissa McCarthy, Lena Waithe and Kate Hudson as teammates, while James went with stars like Harry Styles, Benedict Cumberbatch, Reggie Watts and Game of Thrones’s John Bradley.

“You will not believe how easy it was to get people to do this,” the 55-year-old told the camera crew while warming up to play. “All I had to say was ‘you’re gonna throw a ball at James Corden,’” she joked.

In one of her classic inspirational moments, former US President Barack Obama’s wife turned to her teammates to give them one last pep talk before the game began.

“I want you to know I’m proud of each and every one of you. Strength is not measured by how you throw the ball, it is measured in here,” she gushed, patting her chest.

“When they go low, we also go low because that’s how dodgeball works,” the author said, putting a spin on her popular slogan “When they go low, we go high.”

The hilarious game was full of action, with each player throwing and getting hit with bright orange blow-up balls. Team UK enjoyed a half-time treat of afternoon tea, crumpets and finger sandwiches as they chatted over the happenings of the game in a very stereotypically British way.

At one point, Team UK let go of their pride and lined up to asked Michelle to sign their copies of Becoming, her recently published memoir. Sadly, no one wanted to sign James’s book, despite the offer being on the court!

The last time Michelle appeared on an episode with the dad-to-three, she was belting out Beyoncé tunes in the passenger seat of his car. It’s clear she had a good time singing one of her favourite songs, “Single Ladies.”

“I’ve been in a car, maybe it was months ago, with my daughter who learned to drive. That was the only time in seven-and-a-half years that I’ve been in a passenger seat, listening to music, rocking out like this,” she mused.
