Shawn Mendes finally opens up about his relationship with Hailey Baldwin

Shawn Mendes wears his heart on his sleeve, both in his music and in his latest cover interview with Rolling Stone. After his whirlwind rise to stardom from Internet crush to Hollywood heartthrob, fans of the Toronto native are always wondering about his relationship status. So, when he and Hailey Baldwin attended the Met Gala together this past May, the Mendes army naturally went berserk.

It was the first time the world had seen him paired up, and with a gorgeous fellow celebrity to boot, leaving big-time fans of the 20-year-old singer gushing over the adorable way the two interacted on the red carpet (remember when Shawn helped place Hailey’s Tommy Hilfiger gown for photos?). Finally, the award winner has confirmed that they were, in fact, an item – despite much speculation about whether they were just friends, having been spotted hugging in a Toronto park last December. “I don’t even want to put a title on it,” he shared of the pair’s relationship. “I think it was more of a zone of limbo.”

A month after their Met Gala debut, the 22-year-old supermodel was engaged to her now-husband, Justin Bieber, another Canadian star. “I get it, you know. I texted Hailey, ‘congratulations,’ and I really am happy for them. She’s still one of the coolest people ever. She’s not just a beautiful person visually, but she’s one of the most beautiful hearts I’ve ever met,” he shared candidly with the glossy. “I think I’m an idiot to not, you know … But you can’t control your heart.”

And you can’t control what people say about you, including guessing about celebrities’ sexuality. “In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone — like a girl — in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” he says. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.” And it’s not just to prove anything – while scrolling Instagram earlier in the week, he alluded to feeling left out, seeing all of the famous people coupled up. “I had this thought: ‘I had to get paparazzied with someone. Who am I going to get? I’m not relevant,” he said, before scolding himself for thinking such things.

It’s evident that the stylish musician feels the pressure to keep his fame alive. “It’s literally my biggest fear, to wake up tomorrow and nobody cares,” he told the glossy, describing himself as extremely neurotic. But given the popularity of his catchy hits – like “Treat You Better” and, most recently, “In My Blood” – and a year that saw him top the charts, nab high-profile awards, perform for the Queen and make Time’s 100 list, he doesn’t appear to be going anywhere any time soon.
