‘Optimistic’ Kim Kardashian meets with Donald Trump to discuss prison reform

Kim Kardashian has been making it a priority to help people in need. Her latest cause is prison reform and advocating on behalf of people she feels were wrongfully incarcerated. On Wednesday (May 31), the reality star paid a visit to the White House to discuss these issues close to her heart with President Donald Trump, and she said in a statement following that she’s feeling “optimistic.”

The business mogul met with the American leader specifically to advocate on behalf of Alice Marie Johnson , a woman who is currently serving a life term in prison without parole for a non-violent drug offense. The great-grandmother’s case was recently documented in a video by Mic that went viral on Twitter in Oct. 2017.

While details of the discussion have not yet been released, the 37-year-old had seemingly planned on asking the president to grant Alice clemency and release her from prison. Donald took to Twitter to thank the mother of three for stopping by. “Great meeting with @KimKardashian today, talked about prison reform and sentencing,” he captioned a photo of the two posing in the Oval Office.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Kim said: “I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense. We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson’s future and hopeful that she – and so many like her – will get a second chance at life.”

Ahead of the meeting, Kanye West’s wife told Mic, “I’ve been fighting very hard and am willing to do what it takes to fight for what’s right.” Her time with the world leader is the culmination of months of campaigning on Alice’s behalf, including numerous private meetings with President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner (LINK: https://mic.com/articles/189162/exclusive-kardashian-west-in-talks-with-white-house-about-pardoning-nonviolent-drug-offender#.iZLVfbGW6). Falling on a rather serendipitous date, the meeting took place on Alice’s birthday.

This isn’t the first time Kim has gotten involved in politics. Late last year, she joined other celebrities like Rihanna and Cara Delevingne in an effort to free Cyntoia Brown, who was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 16.
