Amal on falling in love with George Clooney: “It felt like the most natural thing in the world”

Even for Amal Clooney, a beautiful human rights barrister at the top of her field, true love seemed like a far-off Hollywood fairy tale. Before her husband George Clooney came along, Amal revealed to Vogue that she wasn’t sure falling for someone, getting married and having a family were in the cards for her at all.

But falling head over heels with the A-list star was the easiest thing of all, and the cover star gushed about the courtship in her interview. “It felt like the most natural thing in the world. Before that experience, I always hoped there could be love that was overwhelming and didn’t require any weighing or decision-making.” And this was it!

Most people desire the kind of love story that the respected lawyer has with her husband, with whom she shares adorable ten-month-old twins Alexander and Ella. But Amal recognizes that it’s mostly out of their hands. “It’s the one thing in life that I think is the biggest determinant of happiness, and it’s the thing you have the least control over,” she remarked thoughtfully. “I was 35 when I met him. It wasn’t obvious that it was going to happen for me. And I wasn’t willing or excited about the idea of getting married or having a family in the absence of that.”

It seems like two “wrongs” really do make a right, because George was in the same boat, uninterested in marriage as he’d been there and done that. But when he met Amal, all bets were off. The actor got creative as he wooed his future wife, who said he would e-mail her in the voice of his late puppy pal, Einstein, claiming to be desperate for her legal advice. Sadly, George had to put Einstein to sleep late last year due to old age, but he’ll be forever remembered for the part he played in their lives and their courtship!

As one of Hollywood’s hottest couples, fans are always eager to know more about George and Amal, who work hard to keep their private lives out of the spotlight. But the proud mom did let a few cute cats out of the bag. For one, Ella and Alexander have said their first words! “We’ve had some ‘Mamas’ and ‘Dadas.’ George was very careful to ensure that ‘Mama’ was the first word.” And in a Facetime chat between the parents while George was shooting a commercial in Los Angeles, he referred to his little ones by a playful nickname: “the knuckleheads.” He’s likely to have come up with the moniker during the family’s daily cuddle time, which Amal revealed happens in bed between the hours of 6 am and 8 am.

Well before George, Amal had already made a solid name for herself as a fierce intellect in the human rights realm, building an incredible career advocating for those who could not defend themselves. And while her schedule has gotten a whole lot busier, now chock full of family activities, she’s not slowing down on her impactful work any time soon!
