Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie delivered a passionate speech on gender equality at this year’s Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany. The duo, who have always been dedicated advocates for women’s rights, addressed the crowd at Barclaycard Eve on Thursday (July 6).

“[The] fight for fairness and equality starts with empowering women and girls,” said Justin, to which Sophie added: “The really big issues we face – things like climate change, poverty, and disease – these affect women and girls more than anything else.” The Canadian politician also promised to address women’s rights and gender equality when he meets with world leaders at Friday’s G20 Summit.

The father of three further demonstrated his dedication to the cause by announcing Canada’s first Feminist International Assistance Policy. Sophie explained that the new initiative “puts women and girls at the heart of these efforts,” while investing in “grassroots women’s organizations like never before,” added Justin.

Then it was time to celebrate with music. The couple was delighted to introduce the festival’s headlining act Coldplay, who were later joined on stage by Shakira to perform a duet of “A Sky Full of Stars.” Other performers included Pharrell Williams and Ellie Goulding.

Following the show, Ellie jumped on Instagram to share a picture of herself with the prime minister, whom she called one of her ‘heroes.”
