Watch: Miley Cyrus reacts to her ‘Hannah Montana’ audition tape

Miley Cyrus has come a long way from her Disney days, but the 24-year-old still looks back on her breakout role in Hannah Montana with a smile.

The singer received a special surprise when she dropped by Radio Disney on Thursday (May 11) to promote her new single “Malibu.” Much to Miley’s delight, the station’s staff scoured the archives and unearthed the Tennessee native’s audition tape from over 11 years ago.

In the clip, a 12-year-old Miley, dressed in a “I Should Have My Own TV Show” t-shirt, is seen belting out her original song called “Beach Weekend.” Naturally, the singer-actress still knows every word and lip-synced along to the vintage recording.

Even before landing the role that would forever change her life, the sometimes-controversial star was convinced she was destined for stardom. When asked by a producer if she was signed to a label, a young Miley exclaimed with confidence, “No, but it’s going to happen!”

Since wrapping the popular Disney Channel series in 2011, Miley has starred in a list of blockbuster films and released two albums, including the smash hit Bangerz in 2013. And after making headlines for her avant-garde behaviour both on and off stage, the singer has been living a quieter less-controversial life since reconciling with fiancé Liam Hemsworth in 2015.

Speaking with Billboard, Miley explained, “I love talking to people, and I approach them in a normal, ‘Don’t treat me different, ’cause I’m not’ way. That’s what started this evolution for me.” She also revealed how her life has changed since she gave up smoking marijuana. “like to surround myself with people that make me want to get better, more evolved, open. And I was noticing, it’s not the people that are stoned. I want to be super clear and sharp, because I know exactly where I want to be.”
