Drew Barrymore ‘putting one foot in front of the other’ following divorce

Actress Drew Barrymore held nothing back while talking about her divorce on the premiere episode of Chelsea Handler's new Netflix talk show. The mother of two admitted that she used the word "failure" in her official statement confirming her split from husband Will Kopelman because it represented how she was feeling during the difficult time.

"I put in my statement about divorce the word 'failure' because it's so honest," she told Chelsea, adding, "When you get divorced you're like, 'I'm the biggest failure. This is the biggest failure.' It's so shameful and hard to actually go through that, even privately."

The couple announced their divorce in April after nearly four years of marriage. At the time they stated that even though their "family is separating legally," their children Olive, 3, and two-year-old Frankie would always be their number one priority. "Our children are our universe," said the couple.

And though the pair tried to work things out, they were heading in different directions. "They wanted different things," a source told People. "Sometimes you want so badly to have what you didn't have and then when you get it, it's not exactly what you thought it would be." A second source added that the Hollywood actress and her estranged husband Will, who is the son of former Chanel CEO Arie Kopelman, were just very different people.

During the debut of Chelsea, the 41-year-old explained the complexities of divorce. "It's a tough time. It's a hard thing to go through. It's like your being put on a cheese grater and every second, going, 'Ah! This wasn't the plan!"

Still, the optimistic star is "putting one foot in front of the other" thanks to support from family and friends. "Everyone has just been so cool and chill and nice about everything that it quelled my own fears and demons about how we sort of have to go through things in life."
