Eddie Redmayne helps pay drama students' rent

Eddie Redmayne has not let his meteoric rise to fame go to his head. Proving that he really is Hollywood's Mr. Congeniality, the 34-year-old actor told GQ that he regularly pays the rent of struggling actors in London.

Calling the city "impossibly expensive," he admitted to getting letters from drama students who can't afford their apartments. The Brit went on to say he occasionally suppliments their income because he was fortunate enough to live rent-free before breaking into the business.

"The greatest privilege that I had was that my parents lived in London," Eddie said. "So when I was out of university and out of work for a year, working in a pub, I didn't pay rent." It was a financial leg up that helped him focus on the craft and eventually land his first small role in a stage production of Oliver!.

Today the star -- who celebrates his birthday on Jan. 6 -- is one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. He won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything in 2015, and is up for a Golden Globe for his recent work in The Danish Girl. The newlywed is also reportedly expecting his first child with his wife, Hannah Bagshawe.

"I love telling interesting stories about interesting people and I was incredibly lucky with The Theory of Everything to play one of the most riveting people I have ever encountered," he told The Wall Street Journal last year. "The fact that [people] enjoyed the film has meant the world [me] and the recognition for it has been truly overwhelming."

Up next for the actor is the J.K. Rowling film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
