Diary of the Week: Teddy Bear Affair, Lunch with Margaret & George, True Patriot Love Tribute Dinner, Thom Browne and Sarah Richardson

It was twenty-eight years ago that a small group of influential Torontonians set out to transform the lives of at-risk children for the better. Their mission was to provide hope, stability and security to children in need. Together, they created the first Teddy Bear Affair. This year’s event celebrated the sights and sounds of Italy, with support from more than 1000 patrons who gowned it up for the grand event. The highlight of the night was a spoken word performance by foundation ambassador and former young-person-in-care Troy Elleston. It was a powerful moment. A whopping $25 million has been raised for the Children’s Aid Foundation.

When Lisa and George Corbo do something, they do it PERFETTO! There was a certain excitement in the air for this year’s Lunch with Margaret & George, held at the AGO. Ladies arrived in the most elegant attire, setting champagne glasses immediately clinking and levels of chatter to a feverish pitch. The afternoon of fashion and fundraising was off to a marvelous start! After a gorgeous luncheon, it was time for the runway show, featuring the colourful designs of Emanuel Ungaro for spring/summer 2015. Proceeds from the event benefit The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s BELIEVE IT Billion Dollar Challenge to set a new gold standard in personalized cancer medicine. This year, funds will be directed to supporting the Immune Therapy Program. Believe!

The True Patriot Love Tribute Dinner always ranks as a personal favourite. Once again presented by Bell Canada, the sixth annual evening in Toronto was just a bit more somber than usual. With the recent deaths of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent on our own soil, this show of national unity and respect held extra significance. It was a moving night with a long moment of silence for the aforementioned soldiers and for 158 who lost their lives while serving in Afghanistan. Guests left on a high note though, with a raise-the-roof performance by Our Lady Peace (and Raine Maida, a true patriot himself), who got many of the men and women in uniform on their feet. More than $20 million has been raised over the past 6 years.

Leave it it to visionary (fashion, events and otherwise) Nicholas Mellamphy to throw another one of the most fun cocktailers at The Room. His inspiration for the extravagant fete must have been taken from designer Thom Browne’s inspired spring/summer 2015 collection. Browne made the special trip to Toronto, where all eyes were on him. Stilt walkers dressed in Thom Browne frocks and floral headpieces towered over guests while dancing around the room with surprising ease, while the space was transformed with psychedelic wallpaper and grass-covered floors. God was most certainly in the details at this mega-bash. (For more on the party, check out Shinan Govani’s column this week!)
