Diary of the Week: Uncrate India, Starlight Gala and Red Rose Ball

We're kicking off our new weekly online social diary with three megawatt events: The Uncrate India launch, Starlight Children's Foundation Gala and the Red Rose Ball.

As soon as guests stepped off the elevator on the second floor of Holt Renfrew's Bloor Street location in Toronto, they were bedecked with bindis and sent on to the ladies shoe department - nearly unrecognizable as a vibrant Indian wonderland celebrating Uncrate India. The collaboration between Alexandra Weston and Waris Ahluwalia culminated from a trip to India, in which a capsule collection's worth of artisan-crafted goodies was selected (a lump sum of profits benefits UNICEF). From the henna and bangle stations to butter chicken poutine and a traditional dance performance, this was certainly an affair to remember.

London was most certainly calling as more than 700 guests descended on Toronto's Fairmont Royal York Hotel for the 19th annual Starlight Children's Foundation Gala. It was a celebrity-studded event that raised record-breaking amounts of charitable dollars. With the support of lead sponsor Toys "R" Us, the UK-themed event raised more than $500,000 for Starlight Canada. As Austin Powers would say, "yeah baby, yeah!"

It was a grand affair as The St. George’s Society of Toronto hosted the Red Rose Ball, also at the historic Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Acclaimed actor, writer and funnyman, Rick Mercer, received the Award of Merit for his contributions to the community in an evening of fun and philanthropy in support of Casey House and the many charitable works of St. George’s. And our Red Rose Ball Contest winners, Tammy and Phil, got a taste of Toronto celebrity sitting at the head table with Rick!
