Meghan Markle's Givenchy dress reminded us of another royal wedding look

The most exciting part about watching a royal wedding unfold is seeing how the bride and groom make the day their own with personal touches, their choice of guests and, of course, what they wear to say "I do." In the case of Meghan Markle, the newest member of the royal family chose to wear a dress designed by Claire Waight Keller of Givenchy, a timeless silk confection that was striking in its simplicity - and it was reminiscent of another royal wedding dress, that of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands when she married King Willem-Alexander in 2002.

On her big day, the former investment banker wore a long-sleeved Valentino couture dress. The ball gown-style creation was crafted with ivory Mikado silk and featured a long train embroidered with lace. Her sparkling headpiece combined the Dutch Pearl Button Tiara with some of Queen Emma's diamond stars.

Meghan also opted for a gown made in a silk fabric with three-quarter-length sleeves and a long train, though the Duchess of Sussex had a slightly lower bateau neckline and more A-list silhouette. The dress she wore to marry Prince Harry was made with exclusive double-bonded silk cady, according to Kensington Palace. She finished her look with Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara, on loan from the Queen, and a delicate veil designed with the distinctive flora of each of the 53 Commonwealth countries.

The two royal brides brought their own distinctive flair as they said "I do." The then-Crown Princess had her red-clad bridesmaids holding her train from the sides, while Meghan enlisted bestie Jessica Mulroney's seven-year-old twins, Brian and John Mulroney, to hold her veil at the tail end. The former actress also opted for a more subtle lip colour, and Maxima's earrings dangled whereas Meghan's were studs. But one thing is for certain - both brides were picture perfect at their royal weddings!
