Happy Birthday, Your Majesty! <strong><a href=/tags/0/queen-elizabeth-ii>The Queen</a></strong> turns 95 years old on April 21, an incredible milestone in what has been an extraordinary life. Her Majesty is marking the day differently this year, having unfortunately lost beloved husband <strong><a href=/tags/0/prince-philip>Prince Philip</a></strong> on April 9, just a few weeks before her birthday.
<p>Born in her maternal grandmother's house at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London at 2:40 a.m. GMT on April 21, 1926, the Queen was not expected to be our monarch when she was born. She was the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York, later <Strong><a href=/tags/0/king-george-vi>King George VI</a></strong> and the <Strong><a href=/tags/0/queen-mother>Queen Mother</a></strong>. Her life changed forever in 1936, when her uncle, <strong>King Edward VIII</strong>, abdicated and her father became King. After his sad death in 1952, Princess Elizabeth ascended the throne, and has been monarch for nearly 70 years.
<p>We thought it would be good to mark this important birthday by taking a look back at the Queen's early years, from her birth to ascending to the throne.

<p><a href=/tags/0/queene-elizabeth-ii><strong>The Queen</a></strong>'s style-icon status has been cemented by <em>Vogue</em>, blending a timeless sensibility with an insatiable zest for colour! And it's with good reason that she goes bold.
<p>"She needs to stand out for people to be able to say 'I saw the queen'," her daughter-in-law, <a href=/tags/0/countess-of-wessex><strong>Countess of Wessex</a></strong>, explained in a documentary. "Don't forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the queen's hat as she went past."
<p>When Her Majesty is in bloom, often on tour or for summer parties, her floral fabrics feature bursts of red, pink, green and blue. Each and every look is mapped out by her personal wardrobe adviser, <a href=/tags/0/angela-kelly><strong>Angela Kelly</a></strong>, and the duo has it down to an art.
