The JUNO Awards were originally due to be held in March, but were postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. They were handed out in a virtual ceremony on June 29, and Alessia Cara – who was to host the ceremony this year – walked away with the most prizes.
The 23-year-old from Brampton, Ont. picked up the Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year for her The Pains of Growing. She was also named Songwriter of the Year.
Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes took home two awards, winning Single of the Year for his "Señorita" collaboration with girlfriend Camila Cabello. He was also named Artist of the Year.
The digital event featured performances from Alessia, along with iskwē, Neon Dreams and The Dead South. Neon Dreams was named Breakthrough Group of the Year and The Dead South won the Traditional Roots Album of the Year prize. Canadian mainstay and superstar Avril Lavigne picked up the JUNO Fan Choice Award, which is decided by voters every year.
