Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Garner, Miley Cyrus and more celebrities will honour 2020 grads with Facebook special

Schools across the world have closed their doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in many changes to how students are educated. That means students won't be celebrating their graduations the way they usually do.

To help 2020 grads still mark the important milestone in their lives, Facebook is streaming a graduation ceremony on May 15 – and the stars are helping out!

The #Graduation2020: Facebook and Instagram Celebrate the Class of 2020 special streaming event will feature a commencement speech from none other than Oprah Winfrey!

Other celebrities who will be sharing their anecdotes and words of wisdom include Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Lil Nas X and Simone Biles.

Additionally, Miley Cyrus will perform her hit "The Climb."

"This is a bittersweet time for the Class of 2020," said Marne Levine, VP of Global Partnerships, Business and Corporate Development, in a press release.

"As students head toward graduation, it’s not the day they might have imagined — no processions, no diploma handoffs, no parties.

"They are commencing at a time of great uncertainty. But graduating is a tremendous achievement, and worth pausing to celebrate even in these circumstances. That’s why Facebook has planned a special event on the Facebook app and Instagram."

Instagram and Facebook will also provide resources so students can host virtual graduation parties, such as special graduation stickers and playlists.

With people isolating and some under lockdown or in quarantine, the virtual graduation will provide a way for students, their families, friends and others to feel connected. And it will be a special way to mark the day.

As of this writing, Johns Hopkins University of Medicine reports there have been more than 3 million cases of COVID-19 confirmed in 185 countries and regions. The illness has killed more than 212,000 people worldwide, but more than 906,000 people have recovered from it so far.
