Turns out Justin Trudeau and Antoni Porowskihave a lot more in common that a good head of hair and calling Montreal a home-away-from-home – they share quite a few fans, too! On Aug. 19, the Canadian politician and Queer Eye star teamed up for the ultimate Pride-themed brunch and discussion in celebration of the colourful time of year when LGBTQIA folks honour diversity in Quebec’s biggest city. Can you say #BrunchGoals?
Before walking together in the Pride parade later that day, along with the PM’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the two took their spot on stage at Hotel Nelligan to chat about why Pride is so important and, of course, their shared love for Montreal bagels. “Sophie, you’re so sweet, but there’s something you’re wrong about – it’s Saint-Viateur bagels, not Fairmont,” Antoni, 34, joked, poking fun at the mother of three’s favourite bagel shop in the city. The 46-year-old politician quickly chimed in: “I knew it! As soon as she said Fairmont, I said, ‘Oh no, we’ve been out of Montreal for too long.’”
Justin made history in 2016 when he became the first prime minister to attend Toronto’s Pride Parade, so to say he has a passion for the community would be an understatement. For Antoni, getting comfortable with the event took a little longer. “I didn’t think it was something that I had to engage in because I thought that it was just about parties, and that was my perception. I kind of stayed away from it,” the foodie explained. “I’m understanding the definition of the word ‘visibility.’ I think we really can’t undermine the importance of it. Just by showing up, and being myself and who I am, and representing myself as part of the LGBTQIA+ community… I take that very seriously.”
Thank you Montreal for opening your streets for Pride as we marched for the love and equality we ALL deserve. A bientôt ️❤️ pic.twitter.com/at24V9TDJx— Antoni Porowski (@antoni) August 20, 2018
Justin followed the Netflix star’s powerful response with his own: “Being able to walk in Pride, openly, proudly and celebrate their identities really, really makes a difference in people’s lives, really tells them that they are included, that they are loved, and that’s a message we can never give too often or too strongly.” The PM just announced that he’ll be running for office again next year, hoping to serve the country for another four years.
The Huffington Post reported that during the brunch, which was a fundraiser hosted by the Liberal Party, lucky attendees munched on chicken and waffles, scrambled eggs, muffins, croissants and an avocado-based sauce – fitting for the star who’s claim to fame began with avocado recipes!
